Jamois Marguerite

French actress and theatre stage director. Marguerite Jamois began her career in 1920 as an extra for Firmin Gémier, then immediately afterwards, was cast in the principal role of Amants puérils (Lovers Perils) by Fernand Crommelynck. In 1921-1922 she played alongside Charles Dullin at the Studio des Ursulines (playing the role of Marianne in Molières LAvare, LOccasion de Mérimée) and then teamed up definitively with Gaston Baty. Between 1920 and 1947, she created 45 different roles. Her rather austere physique did not predispose her to comedy. Her most important roles were Jean-Jacques Bernards Martine (1922); Simon Gantillons Maya (1924); Phaedra; The Taming of the Shrew; and Lady Macbeth. She succeeded Gaston Baty as director of the Montparnasse Theatre in Paris from 1943 and remained in this position for twenty years.
