Biography

Who is Lee Geddy?

Canadian musician, singer, and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist, bassist, and keyboardist for the Canadian rock group Rush. Lee joined what would become Rush in September 1968, at the request of his childhood friend Alex Lifeson, replacing original bassist and frontman Jeff Jones. Lees first and so far only solo effort, My Favourite Headache, was released in 2000. An award-winning musician, Lees style, technique, and skill on the bass guitar have inspired many rock musicians such as Cliff Burton of Metallica, Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, John Myung of Dream Theater, Les Claypool of Primus, and Tim Commerford of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. Along with his Rush bandmates – guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer Neil Peart – Lee was made an Officer of the Order of Canada on 9 May 1996. The trio was the first rock band to be so honoured, as a group. In 2013, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after 14 years of eligibility; they were nominated overwhelmingly in the Halls first selection via fan ballot. Lee is ranked 13th by Hit Parader on their list of the 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Vocalists of All Time. In 2018 Lee published Geddy Lees Big Beautiful Book of Bass, which highlights his collection of over 250 basses along with interviews with some of leading bass players and bass technicians. The band rose from early albums to international prominence with landmark releases such as Fly by Night (1975), 2112 (1976) and Moving Pictures (1981). Lee’s high-pitched vocal style and virtuosic bass playing—often combining keyboards and synthesizers—became signatures of Rush’s sound.

The band released Clockwork Angels in 2012 as their latest studio album before Neil Peart’s passing in 2020. In 2013, Rush was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their influence on progressive and hard rock.
