For years she worked with the researcher Stanley Cohen, searching for “causes of growth,” during which time she discovered Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), which is responsible for the development and distribution of nerve cells. She won several prizes throughout the world for her significant research, including the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1986 for her discovery of NGF. In 1987 she was awarded the National Medal of Science and in 2001 she was appointed as Senator-for-Life for her outstanding contributions to science. She never married. She died 30 December 2012, Rome. She was 103 and had worked well into her final years. Link to Wikipedia biography

Biography and career highlights

Levi-Montalcini studied medicine at the University of Turin, where she trained under the physician-scientist Giuseppe Levi. Her early career included overcoming the barriers of the Fascist racially discriminatory laws of 1938. Her groundbreaking research on nerve growth factor (NGF) established a central mechanism by which neurons grow and survive, earning her the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine alongside Stanley Cohen.

Her research helped inaugurate modern neurobiology and opened new avenues for understanding neural growth, development, and regeneration. Beyond the bench, she held roles in science policy and public life, serving as a Senator for Life in Italy and engaging in science education and outreach through the Rita Levi-Montalcini Foundation.

Nobel Prize and NGF

In 1986, Levi-Montalcini and Stanley Cohen were awarded the Nobel Prize for their discoveries of growth factors, including NGF, which is essential for the growth and maintenance of certain neurons. This work linked molecular signals to neural development and has influenced research in neurobiology, developmental biology, and medicine.

Public roles and legacy

In 2001, she was named a Senator for Life of Italy, reflecting her extraordinary contributions to science and culture. She also chaired and participated in numerous scientific and educational initiatives, emphasizing opportunities for women in science and the importance of biomedical research for global health. Her legacy lives on through the Rita Levi-Montalcini Foundation, which funds scholarships, research grants, and science outreach in underrepresented regions, and through educational programs inspired by her work and advocacy.

News, social media presence and public projects

As a figure who lived through the 20th century and passed away in 2012, Levi-Montalcini does not have personal social media profiles. Public engagement and ongoing visibility come from the Rita Levi-Montalcini Foundation, major science institutions, and news outlets covering anniversaries, lectures, awards, and the continued impact of NGF research. Foundation activities typically include scholarships, grants for young researchers, public lectures, and international outreach to promote science education and gender equality in STEM.
