French economist, lawyer,and politician appointed as managing director of the International Monetary Fund on September 28, 2007. In France usually called DSK. In 1986 DSK was elected to the French National Assembly and was re-elected for several years afterward. A high-ranking member of the Socialist Pary, he was made Minister forEconomics, Finance and Industry in 1997. Well-regarded for his work at the IMF, in early 2011 he was considered a serious opponent to Nicholas Sarkozy in the next presidential election. In 2008 he reportedly had an affair with an IMF subordinate. He called it a "grave mistake." His reputation as a womanizer took on additional gravity when he was arrested on May 14, 2011 by New York City police for a sexual assault he allegedly made on a hotel maid. The incident was reported to have taken place at around 1:00 PM in the Manhattan hotel where he had stayed. He later proceded to the airport and boarded an Air France jet bound for Paris. The police removed him from the plane at about 4:40 PM, just minutes before the jet was scheduled to take off. He was officially arrested on May 15, 2011 at 2:15 AM (data from the New York Times).He resigned from his IMF post on May 19, 2011. As prosecutors case seemed to be weakening, he was released from house arrest and bail obligations on July 1, 2011 pending further developments. However news broke of another woman alleging that he assaulted her in 2003. The French writer accused him of attempted rape during an interview. Strauss-Kahns lawyers immediately countersued the writer for slander. On August 23, 2011, a judge dismissed all charges brought by the New York City hotel maid at the prosecutors request. The prosecutors made the decision to ask for dismissal after they decided that they could not prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Later, on October 13, 2011, the French writer and her team of prosecutors announced that they were also dropping charges because the statute of limitations had run out. The civil lawsuit between DSK and the hotel maid was settled on 10 December 2012, with an unknown sum paid by DSK to the maid.
