Who is Walton Sam?

American entrepreneur, the founder of Wal-Mart and Sams Club and personification of the American Dream of self-made success. A scrappy, bantam-rooster of a boy, he grew up in the poverty of the dusk-bowl. A high-school quarterback, he earned money from delivering papers and selling milk from the family cow and served in the army during WWII. With foresight and vision, he opened his first store in 1945 and parlayed his skill into becoming Americas wealthiest man in 40 years. Sam Walton died from multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, in Little Rock, Arkansas on 5 April 1992 at age 74. His second son and heir to the fortune, John Walton, died in a fatal plane crash on 27 June 2005. The tiny plane was home-built and crashed just after take-off from Jackson Hole, Wyoming airport at about 12:15 PM. The decorated Vietnam veteran, an entrepreneur in his own right, was 58 at the time of his death. Link to Wikipedia biography

Sam Walton (Samuel Moore Walton) — Public Profile

Birth and early life

Samuel Moore Walton, commonly known as Sam Walton, was born on March 29, 1918, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, United States. He grew up during the Great Depression era, developing an early interest in value, efficiency, and retail. His birthplace and era helped shape a practical, customer-focused approach that would later define Walmart’s business model.

Education and early career

Walton attended the University of Missouri, where he earned a degree in economics in 1940. After serving in World War II, he entered the retail industry, gaining experience that would inform his later innovations in discount retailing. The postwar period provided the testing ground for Walton’s ideas about low prices, large-volume sales, and efficient store operations.

Retail career and Walmart

Following the war, Walton operated Walton's Five & Dime stores and later opened Walton Discount City operations as the concept evolved. In 1962, he opened the first Wal-Mart Discount City in Rogers, Arkansas, with a focus on everyday low prices and broad selection. The Walmart concept grew rapidly, expanding across states and eventually becoming a global retail network. Walton also helped launch Sam's Club in 1983, expanding the family’s retail footprint into warehouse wholesale formats.

Legacy and family

Sam Walton built Walmart with his brother James “Bud” Walton, and their leadership transformed the family into one of the most influential American business dynasties. After Walton’s death on April 5, 1992, leadership passed to his children and trusted executives, ensuring continuity of the Walton family’s influence on Walmart’s strategy. The Walton Family Foundation has become a major philanthropic force, supporting education, community development, and arts through family-led initiatives.

News, media, and public discourse

Because Sam Walton passed away in 1992, contemporary news about him focuses on his lasting impact, retrospective analyses of Walmart’s rise, and the broader effects of discount retailing. Biographies, obituaries, and commemorations recount his business philosophy and the scale of Walmart’s growth. Modern reporting often situates Walton’s legacy within ongoing corporate performance, governance, and the Walton family’s ongoing involvement in philanthropy and business leadership.
