Wicker Tom

American writer, a journalist and novelist, who made his reputation as a newspaper columnist with his coverage of the death of President John F. Kennedy for the New York Times. Nine months later, on September 1, 1964, he became the newspapers Washington Bureau Chief. He is the author of 20 books, including the 1964 "Kennedy without Tears," and the 1975 book "A Time to Die" about the uprising at Attica prison. The book was made into the popular movie, "Attica," five years later (1980). Many of his novels were published under the pen name of Paul Connolly. Wicker served in the Navy during WWII and in 1948 graduated from college with a major in journalism. He worked on South Carolina newspapers at the outset of his long career in the industry. He joined the New York Times in 1960. Mr. Wicker married twice, first to Neva Jewett McLean in 1949. After having two children, they divorced in 1973. The following year, he married Pamela Hill, a documentary producer. Wicker suffered a fatal heart attack on November 25, 2011 at his home near Rochester, VT. Link to Wikipedia biography Read less
