Your Lagna, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place you were born. In Vedic astrology it marks the first house of the birth chart, and every other house is counted from it.
Use the time from your birth certificate if you have it. The result shows your Lagna sign and degree, its nakshatra and lord, your Moon sign, and a full Lagna chart.
Everything below is calculated from the same chart, so the numbers always agree with each other.
The rising sign, with its exact degree. If the degree is close to the edge of the sign, the result says so.
The nakshatra (lunar mansion) the ascendant falls in, its pada (quarter) and the nakshatra's ruling planet.
The planet that rules your Lagna sign, and the sign and house it occupies in your chart.
Your Rashi (the sign the Moon was in) and the Moon's nakshatra, which many Vedic calculations start from.
Your birth chart in North Indian or South Indian style, with every planet placed in its house.
Each planet's sign, degree, house and nakshatra, with retrograde and combust planets marked.
The Earth turns once a day, so all twelve signs rise over the eastern horizon in about 24 hours, roughly two hours each on average. Signs rise faster or slower depending on the sign and on how far from the equator you were born.
That means the Moon sign can often be found from the date alone, but the Lagna cannot. A difference of a few minutes can move the ascendant into the next sign when it sits near a sign boundary. If you do not know your birth time, an astrologer can estimate it from major life events, a process called birth-time rectification.
Vedic astrology measures signs against the fixed stars. The Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa is the offset used, computed for your birth date rather than a fixed constant.
The whole Lagna sign is the first house, the next sign is the second house, and so on. This is how the chart is drawn and how each planet's house is counted.
The time zone is worked out for the place and the date of birth, so older births use the clock offset that applied at the time, not today's.
The lunar nodes are the true nodes. Ketu is always exactly opposite Rahu.
