Atmakaraka Calculator Find your Atmakaraka, Darakaraka and all your Jaimini karakas

In Jaimini astrology, the chara karakas are the planets ranked by how far each has travelled through its sign. The planet with the highest degree is the Atmakaraka, the significator of the self. The planet with the lowest degree is the Darakaraka, the significator of the spouse.

Enter your birth details

Use the time from your birth certificate if you have it. The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so it is the planet whose karaka role depends most on the birth time.

What the calculator shows

Everything comes from one chart calculation, the same one the Lagna calculator uses.

Atmakaraka and Darakaraka

The planet with the highest degree in its sign and the one with the lowest, with the sign, degree and house of each.

Every karaka in order

Amatyakaraka, Bhratrikaraka, Matrikaraka, Putrakaraka and Gnatikaraka in between, each with the planet's exact degree, so you can check the order.

7 or 8 karakas

The 7-karaka method counts the Sun to Saturn. The 8-karaka method adds Rahu and a Pitrikaraka. Switch between them and see where they differ.

Houses from your Lagna

The house each karaka planet occupies, counted with whole-sign houses from your Lagna.

Notes when it matters

If the Moon is close to the planet next to it, or a planet sits at the very edge of its sign, the result says how its role could change.

Karakamsa

The navamsa (D9) sign your Atmakaraka falls in, for both the 7- and 8-karaka methods, with a note if it sits at the edge of its navamsa.

Why the birth time matters

The karakas are ranked by degree, and most planets move slowly: the Sun about 1° a day, Jupiter and Saturn far less. Over a few hours of birth time their degrees barely change, so their order usually stays the same.

The Moon is the exception. It moves about 13° a day, or half a degree an hour, so when it sits close to another planet's degree, an hour of birth time can swap their roles. The houses depend on the birth time too, because they are counted from the Lagna. If the result shows a note, those are the parts to double-check.

How DKSCORE calculates the karakas

Degree within the sign

Each planet's degree is how far it has travelled through its own sign, from 0° to 30°. A planet at 25° Mesha ranks above one at 10° Makara.

Highest degree first

The highest degree is the Atmakaraka, then the Amatyakaraka, Bhratrikaraka, Matrikaraka, Putrakaraka and Gnatikaraka, down to the Darakaraka with the lowest.

7 karakas by default

The Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, the method our Jaimini articles use. The 8-karaka method adds Rahu, counted backward from the end of its sign (30° minus its degree), and a Pitrikaraka. Ketu is not counted in either.

Sidereal chart, whole-sign houses

Positions come from a sidereal chart with the Lahiri ayanamsa for your date, time and place of birth. Houses are whole signs counted from your Lagna.

FAQ

Atmakaraka calculator: questions and answers

What is the Atmakaraka?
The Atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree in its sign in a birth chart. In Jaimini astrology it is the significator of the self, and astrologers who use the karakas read the rest of the chart in relation to it.
How is the Atmakaraka calculated?
Take each planet's degree within its sign, ignoring which sign it is in, and rank the planets from highest to lowest. For example, in a chart with Saturn at 21.9023°, the Sun at 16.7962°, Mars at 16.0742°, Venus at 12.5375°, Jupiter at 11.4674°, the Moon at 5.6266° and Mercury at 2.0297°, Saturn is the Atmakaraka and Mercury is the Darakaraka. The calculator shows this ranking with your own numbers.
What is the Darakaraka?
The Darakaraka is the planet with the lowest degree in its sign. In Jaimini astrology it is the significator of the spouse and of partners. The calculator shows it next to your Atmakaraka, with its sign, degree and house.
What is the Karakamsa?
The Karakamsa is the sign your Atmakaraka occupies in the navamsa (D9) chart. Jaimini astrologers read it alongside the Atmakaraka itself. The calculator shows it on the Atmakaraka card, from the same chart calculation, and changes it when you switch between 7 and 8 karakas.
Does DKSCORE use 7 or 8 karakas?
The result opens on the 7-karaka method, the Sun to Saturn, which is the method our Jaimini articles use. You can switch to the 8-karaka method, which adds Rahu and a Pitrikaraka (the significator of the father). The result tells you when the two methods give a different Atmakaraka or Darakaraka.
How is Rahu's degree counted in the 8-karaka method?
Rahu moves backward through the zodiac, so its degree is counted from the end of its sign: 30° minus its degree. Rahu at 23.1434° in its sign counts as 6.8566°. Ketu is not counted as a karaka in either method.
Why does another calculator show a different Darakaraka?
There are three common reasons. It may count 8 karakas with Rahu where this result shows 7, or the other way round, so check the switch above the result. A different birth time moves the Moon about half a degree an hour, which can swap it with the planet next to it. And a planet at the very edge of its sign can fall in the next sign with another ayanamsa, which moves it from the top of the order to the bottom. The result tells you when either of the last two applies to your chart.
What if two planets have the same degree?
The calculator compares degrees to four decimal places, so an exact tie is very rare. If it happens, the result says so, because traditions differ on how to break a tie; ask an astrologer which reading they follow.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes. Most planets move too slowly for a few minutes to matter, but the Moon moves about half a degree an hour, and the houses are counted from your Lagna, which changes sign about every two hours. Use the time on your birth certificate if you have it.
Are my birth details saved?
Your details are used only to calculate the result. They are not saved to an account or profile, and they are never added to the page address or sent to analytics.
