Sade Sati is the period of about seven and a half years when Saturn moves through three signs: the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself and the sign after it. Vedic astrologers count it from the sign the Moon was in when you were born (your Rashi), not from your Sun sign or your Lagna.
Sade Sati is counted from your Moon sign, so the birth time matters only when the Moon changed sign on the day you were born. If you do not know your time, tick the box and the calculator checks that for you.

Everything comes from your Moon sign and Saturn's sign changes, taken from one chart calculation.
Whether Saturn is in one of your three Sade Sati signs today, which phase that is, since when, and when the phase and the whole Sade Sati end.
Each cycle from your date of birth to 2040, past, current and upcoming, drawn as a timeline with its three phases.
Saturn turns retrograde every year and can step back into the previous sign. Those steps are shown as separate segments of the same Sade Sati, with their own dates.
The two and a half years when Saturn is in the 4th sign (Kantaka Shani) or the 8th sign (Ashtama Shani) from your Moon sign.
The sign every date is counted from, and a note when the Moon was so close to the edge of a sign that a different birth time would change it.
Sade Sati depends only on your Moon sign. The Moon stays in a sign for about two and a quarter days, so on most dates it is in the same sign all day, and every birth time on that date gives the same Sade Sati dates.
On a date when the Moon changed sign, the birth time decides which sign it was in, and the two signs have Sade Sati about two and a half years apart. Without a birth time, the calculator checks the whole day and asks for the time only when it is needed.

Vedic Astrology
The sidereal sign of the Moon at your birth, from a chart with the Lahiri ayanamsa for your date, time and place of birth.
Phase 1 is Saturn in the 12th sign from your Moon sign, phase 2 in your Moon sign and phase 3 in the 2nd sign. For a Kumbha (Aquarius) Moon, that is Saturn in Makara, Kumbha and Meena.
The dates are the days Saturn enters and leaves each sign, sidereal with the Lahiri ayanamsa. A Sade Sati starts when Saturn first enters the 12th sign and ends when it finally leaves the 2nd.
When Saturn steps back into a sign while retrograde, or briefly out of the three signs and back, that is part of the same Sade Sati, shown as its own segment.
Saturn's dates are calculated up to the end of 2040. If your next Sade Sati starts after that, the result says so; it does not mean there is none.
