Kaal Sarp Dosha Calculator See whether all seven planets lie on one side of Rahu and Ketu

Kaal Sarp dosha, also called Kaal Sarp yoga or Kalasarpa dosha, is a placement in which all seven planets from the Sun to Saturn lie on one side of the axis between Rahu and Ketu. This calculator checks your birth chart, names the type by the house of Rahu, and shows which planets, if any, lie outside.

Enter your birth details

Use the time from your birth certificate if you have it. The type of Kaal Sarp depends on the house of Rahu, which comes from your Lagna.

What the calculator shows

Everything comes from one chart calculation, the same one the other DKSCORE calculators use.

  • Present, partial or not present

A plain answer: all seven planets on one side, six with one outside (partial), or two or more outside.

  • The type by Rahu's house

Twelve named types, one for each house Rahu can occupy: Anant in the 1st through Sheshnag in the 12th.

  • The side of the axis

Whether the planets lie from Rahu forward to Ketu in zodiac order, or from Ketu forward to Rahu.

  • Planets outside the arc

The planet or planets that break the pattern, with a note when one shares Rahu's or Ketu's sign but lies on the other side by degree.

  • Every planet's degree

The seven planets in a table with sign, degree, house and side, so you can check the result yourself.

  • The rules it uses

The five choices on which traditions differ, each with what the calculator does today, shown beside the result.

Why the birth time matters

Rahu and Ketu move slowly, about 1.5° a month, and the Sun to Saturn move at most a degree or two a day, apart from the Moon. So whether the seven planets lie on one side rarely depends on the birth time, except when the Moon is close to the Rahu–Ketu axis.

The type does depend on it: it is named by the house Rahu is in, counted from your Lagna, and the Lagna changes sign about every two hours. A birth time that is off by an hour can change the type even when the answer stays the same.

How DKSCORE checks for Kaal Sarp dosha

  • Positions from your chart

DKSCORE calculates your chart in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa and the true node, with whole-sign houses from the Lagna.

  • One side of the axis, by degree

Rahu and Ketu are always opposite each other, so they cut the zodiac in two halves. The calculator checks whether the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn all lie in one half, using their exact longitudes.

  • The type by Rahu's house

Rahu in the 1st house gives Anant, the 2nd Kulik, the 3rd Vasuki, the 4th Shankhpal, the 5th Padma, the 6th Mahapadma, the 7th Takshak, the 8th Karkotak, the 9th Shankhachud, the 10th Ghatak, the 11th Vishdhar and the 12th Sheshnag.

  • The common rule, under review

Traditions differ on a planet in a node's sign, on partial Kaal Sarp, on the Lagna, on the direction and on cancellations. The calculator follows the most common published rule on each and says which; DKSCORE's astrologers are reviewing these choices.

FAQ

Kaal Sarp dosha calculator: questions and answers

What is Kaal Sarp dosha?
Kaal Sarp dosha is a placement in which all seven planets from the Sun to Saturn lie on one side of the axis between Rahu and Ketu, as if held between the head and the tail of a serpent. Classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra do not describe it by this name; it became widely used in later practice, and astrologers differ on how much weight to give it.
How does this calculator check for it?
DKSCORE calculates your chart and checks the longitude of each of the seven planets against Rahu and Ketu. For example, for a birth in Mumbai on 10 March 1986 at 12:00, Ketu is at 6°53′ Tula and Rahu at 6°53′ Mesha, and all seven planets lie between them going forward from Ketu, from Saturn in Vrishchika to Mercury and Venus in Meena. Rahu is in the 12th house from the Vrishabha Lagna, so the result is Kaal Sarp dosha of the Sheshnag type.
What is partial Kaal Sarp dosha?
When six planets lie on one side and one lies outside, some astrologers call it partial Kaal Sarp. This calculator reports it as partial and does not count it as present. Some traditions do count it, so the result always names the planet outside.
What if a planet is in the same sign as Rahu or Ketu?
The calculator counts by degree. For a birth in Mumbai on 15 June 1990 at 12:00, Saturn is in Makara with Rahu, at 0°19′ while Rahu is at 14°23′, so Saturn lies behind Rahu and outside the arc; the other six are inside, so the result is partial. A tradition that counts by sign would put Saturn inside and call it a full Kaal Sarp. The result adds a note whenever this happens in your chart.
Does the direction matter?
The planets can all lie in the half from Rahu forward to Ketu in zodiac order, or in the half from Ketu forward to Rahu. This calculator counts both as Kaal Sarp and shows which one your chart has. Some traditions call the second Kaal Amrit and read it differently.
Does my Lagna need to be inside the arc?
Some astrologers require it; most do not. The calculator shows whether your Lagna falls inside the arc but does not require it for the result.
Are there cancellations?
Some traditions list placements that reduce or cancel Kaal Sarp, such as a planet joined with Rahu or Ketu. This calculator does not apply any; it reports the placement only. How much it matters is for an astrologer reading your whole chart.
Why is the rule marked as under review?
Traditions differ on the five points above. The calculator uses the most common published choice on each and lists them beside the result, while DKSCORE's astrologers review them. If they settle on a different choice, the result will follow it.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For the yes or no, rarely: the planets and nodes move slowly, except the Moon. For the type, yes: it depends on the house of Rahu, counted from the Lagna, which changes sign about every two hours.
Are my birth details saved?
Your details are used only to calculate the result. They are not saved to an account or profile, and they are never added to the page address or sent to analytics.
